Actually, I don't think that Elon meant that managers should only be knowledgeable.

When I dissected his tweet, I noticed that several strong words have been used (all, must (x2,) excellent, great software). This has prompted to write this story in the first place.

Indeed, If you follow the thread back to his previous interviews, you'll see that he's not a big fan of management practices per se. Hence, the tweet.

Coming to your second point, which is pretty interesting. You mention that Elon and his employees are mission-driven.

I don't entirely agree with that.

I believe, that very few believe in the mission. And people who work for Elon are either intrinsically or extrinsically motivated. I supposed the former is what you were refering to. However, I do feel that the reason behind Elon's large fanbase is more about his character rather than the mission.
